Tax Master

Decoding the byzantine, complicated, and confusing world of taxes.

Most tax advice is either too vague to act on or buried in jargon nobody can read. Max out your 401(k). Itemize if it makes sense. Talk to a professional. Nobody explains how the brackets really stack, which deductions still exist after the latest round of changes, or why two households with the same income can owe very different amounts. Meanwhile the choices that move the most money get the least attention: when to do a Roth conversion, how capital gains interact with your ordinary income, what selling a house or inheriting an IRA does to your bill, and whether your state takes a bigger cut than you think. The Tax Master covers all of it: income and payroll taxes, investments, real estate, small business and side income, estates and inheritances, and the state rules that change the math. We work from the tax code and IRS guidance and run the numbers ourselves, so you can see what you owe, why you owe it, and what you can legally do to owe less.

How this desk works

IRS guidance, the Internal Revenue Code, and state-by-state tax rules, combined with our own modeling, to show you what a tax decision really costs, where the traps are, and how to keep more of what you earn.

The Tax Master desk starts with the law as written and the guidance as issued. Our editors work from the Internal Revenue Code and Treasury regulations, IRS publications, revenue procedures, and annual inflation adjustments to brackets, deductions, and contribution limits, U.S. Tax Court decisions, IRS Statistics of Income data, Joint Committee on Taxation and Congressional Budget Office analyses of new legislation, Social Security Administration wage-base figures, and each state's department of revenue rules on income, property, sales, and estate taxes. We run the calculations ourselves instead of repeating rules of thumb. Our goal is to go beyond explaining how taxes work and show you, in dollars, what each decision costs or saves you at your income, in your filing status, and in your state.
