US Trade Commission Delays HTC Ruling Again (AAPL, GOOG)

The US International Trade Commission has once again delayed its ruling on a filing by Taiwan’s HTC Corp. alleging infringement on the company’s patents by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL). Apple is also seeking to ban US sales of HTC smartphones that use the Android operating system from Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG).

The ruling, originally scheduled for delivery on December 6th,  was supposed to be announced today, but the ITC has delayed the announcement a second time until December 19th. An analyst interviewed by Reuters did not know the reason for the added delay:

We hope the ruling will come as soon as possible so we can predict where the bottom is and whether there will be a settlement, and then we can have a better view of HTC’s fundamentals in the coming one year.

HTC’s suit is part of the jousting match between Apple and Google over patents related to mobile operating systems. The outcome is arguably far more important to HTC than to either Apple or Google. The Taiwanese company sells half its phones in the US.
