The latest portable game player from Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE), the PlayStation Vita, sold more thn 300,000 units in its first two days on sale earlier this month. During the week before Christmas, the new machine sold just over 72,000 units, less than the 73,000 unit sales of the machine it is supposed to replace, the PlayStation 3.

Supply constraints are possible, of course, but the initial manufacturing run of 500,000 should have been able to meet demand. Reports of buggy behavior probably didn’t help sales, but All Things D probably figured out the right combination: high price, a new game launch from Nintendo, and a slim lineup of games at launch time.

The PS Vita is scheduled to launch in North America on February 22nd.
