The European Automobile Manufacturers Association reports that the region’s car sales fell 5.8% in December. That closed a year in which total registrations dropped 1.4% to 13.6 million. Fiat and Peugeot were hit particularly hard. They have only a very small part of the markets outside Europe, which makes their situations even more difficult.
The trouble in Europe will make global car markets rely more on the US market, which was considered dead just three years ago.
Bloomberg reports that
Four of the region’s five biggest markets contracted, with Spain and Italy leading annual declines at 18 percent and 11 percent respectively.
