SAP Working on an Oracle Killer (SAP, ORCL)

A new software program from SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) is taking direct aim at industry-leader Oracle Corp.’s (NASDAQ: ORCL) relational database software. The program, called HANA, departs from SAP’s historical business services software by attacking the database and data mining services that have put Oracle at the top of the business software heap.

According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, SAP’s share of the business software market has dropped from 15.5% in 2007 to 14.8% in 2010, while Oracle’s share has climbed from 9.9% to 10.7% over the same period. In 2011, SAP posted revenue of EURO14.23 billion, a rise of 14% year-over-year, and the company’s goal is EURO20 billion by 2015.

HANA, which runs in the computer’s memory rather than over files stored on hard drives, is currently SAP’s main thrust at Oracle’s main business. For its part, Oracle says its new Exadata machine is even faster than SAP’s HANA. Stay tuned.
