Despite earnings reports which have been largely seen as positive, short sellers increased their bets against tech stocks according to data for the two weeks which ended on January 13. Investors may be concerned that PC sales, and IT purchases by large companies and enterprises will slow in the new year.
Shares short in Intel rose 12.2% to 131.8 million. The short interest in Microsoft was up by 49.8% to 101.5 million. Shares sold short in Dell rose 6.1% to 69.9 million. Data from both researchers Gartner and IDC have shown a slowdown in global PC sales.
In enterprise tech, shares short in Oracle rose 40.8% to 27.4 million. Cisco was an exception. Shares short dropped 4.7% to 60.6 million
