Smartphone Shipments Up 55% in Fourth Quarter (AAPL, NOK, RIMM, SSNLF)

The launch of the iPhone 4S from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) catapulted the market for smartphones to 157.8 million units in the fourth quarter of 2011, up 54.7% from 102 million units shipped in the same period in 2010. Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) experienced a decline in shipments, while Research in Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ: RIMM) avoided a fourth consecutive quarter of declining shipments. Samsung Electronics (OTC: SSNLF) shipped more phones for the year than any other vendor, while Taiwan’s HTC Corp. saw a decline in shipments.

In the fourth quarter, Apple shipped 37 million units to Samsung’s 36 million, Nokia’s 19.6 million, RIM’s 13 million, and HTC’s 10.2 million. For the year, Samsung shipped a total of 94 million units to Apple’s 93.2 million, Nokia’s 77.3 million, RIM’s 51.1 million, and HTC’s 43.5 million.

These are the latest figures compiled by International Data Corp. (IDC) and show that smartphone shipments in 2011 grew by 61.3% over 2010 shipments. In 2011, all vendors shipped 491.4 million smartphones compared with 304.7 million units in 2010.
