SK Hynix Falls 4% on Earnings Caution Before a Rebalancing Goldman Says Favors It; SanDisk Slips 2%, Micron Holds Firm
SK Hynix shares are sliding on earnings fear even as Micron's fresh results point to tight supply and strong AI demand, and a Goldman Sachs analyst sees a mechanical force building behind SK Hynix that the selling may be ignoring…

Memory chip stocks are trading on reporting risk, and the biggest selling is landing on the one major supplier that still has a quarter to report. SK Hynix (NASDAQ:SKHY) is that supplier, even though the sector’s most recent actual results pointed upward.
Listed in the U.S. as an American depositary receipt, SK Hynix stock is down 4% to $187.25 in midday trading. At the same time, SanDisk (NASDAQ:SNDK | SNDK Price Prediction) stock is sliding 2% to $1,675.08 as the selling spreads across memory names. Caution ahead of quarterly results from Korea’s memory makers sits behind the drops in both SK Hynix and SanDisk shares.
Holding firm against the pullback, Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU) stock is up 0.3% to $1,066.91. The Roundhill Memory ETF (CBOE:DRAM) is down 2% as well. Large-cap tech is advancing, with Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:QQQ) up 0.6%, a sign that the weakness is concentrated in memory/storage names while large-cap tech advances.
Korean Earnings Caution Weighs on SK Hynix
Shares of SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics fell in Seoul ahead of Q3 2026 results from both companies, pulling the Korean benchmark index lower. Two overhangs sit on the SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics reports. A stronger won reduces overseas earnings on conversion, and both companies are setting aside provisions for larger worker bonuses out of the past year’s windfall.
Goldman Sachs analyst Heather Oh wrote that a cluster of events lands on Samsung Electronics at once later this week, combining a preliminary quarterly report with semiconductor fund rebalancing, options expiry and the end of a buyback. Oh expects that rebalancing to push the opposite way for SK Hynix, delivering inflows as Samsung Electronics absorbs outflows, and that outlook puts a mechanical bid behind SK Hynix stock just as earnings caution weighs on the shares.
Same Demand, Different Reporting Risk
Last week’s results from Micron Technology cut against the Korean caution, indicating demand held through September and that memory supply stays constrained for at least another year. On the company’s earnings call, Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra stated, “We do not have line of sight to when supply and demand will return to balance.” Micron stock holding steady while SK Hynix stock is dropping suggests the selling is tied to the pending SK Hynix quarter, since both companies sell into the same AI demand.
Supply commentary from Micron CFO Mark Murphy reinforced that reading. “Our inventory levels and supply remain extremely tight.” That backdrop carries into the SK Hynix report, where tight supply may support pricing and the Q3 debate narrows to currency and bonus costs.
Large gains sit behind both Micron Technology and SanDisk shares, with Micron stock up 274% year to date (YTD) and SanDisk stock up 606% YTD. Advances of that scale can leave Micron and SanDisk shares exposed to sharper swings in memory mood, including sympathy moves tied to SK Hynix. The expansion driving that demand runs well past the chipmakers themselves, which is why we pulled together seven power, cooling, and networking suppliers behind the AI data centers in a free report.
What to Look For Now
Traders can watch for whether the rebalancing inflows Oh described reach SK Hynix stock as expected. SK Hynix’s Q3 report is the larger test, since the stronger won and the bonus provisions may trim the company’s results even with memory supply still tight. Samsung Electronics’ preliminary report later this week could also shift mood across Korean memory names.
At the end of the day, carefully measured position sizing is a smart policy when it comes to these fast-moving memory/storage stocks. With SK Hynix still carrying reporting risk this month, a measured stance leaves room to reassess once results show how much demand strength survives currency and bonus costs.
