AMD Vs. Nvidia: If You Can Only Own One to Finish 2026, It’s This One
Both AMD and NVIDIA just posted record Data Center quarters, and their next platforms are shipping months apart. That timing gap could decide which stock wins the rest of 2026.
NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA | NVDA Price Prediction) and AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) both posted record quarters this summer. At each company, Data Center did most of the work. NVIDIA reported $96.22B in revenue on August 26, 2026. AMD reported $11.54B on August 4, 2026. NVIDIA sells entire AI systems, while AMD is just launching its first rack-scale rival. With one quarter left in 2026, timing matters.
Rubin Is Shipping Now, Helios Is Just Getting Started
NVIDIA’s Data Center segment brought in $89.02B, up 117% year over year. NVIDIA’s story is now almost entirely about AI infrastructure. Networking grew 138% to $40.31B, which shows customers are buying complete systems. Vera Rubin production shipments began in August 2026, and Jensen Huang put it simply: “Now, compute is revenue.”
AMD’s Data Center revenue reached $6.72B, up 107%. It now makes up 58% of total revenue, which means AMD is now mainly a server company. Lisa Su said “customer demand for Venice is stronger than for any prior EPYC generation.” Gaming fell 31% because of the console cycle, and that still weighs on the overall results.
| Business Driver | NVIDIA | AMD |
|---|---|---|
| Growth Engine | Full-stack AI factories | EPYC CPUs and Instinct GPUs |
| Next Platform | Vera Rubin, shipping since August | Helios, first shipments in Q3 2026 |
| Q3 Revenue Guide | $108B +/- 2% | ~$13B +/- $300M |
| Weak Spot | No China data center compute in outlook | Gaming down 31% |
NVIDIA Raises Revenue per Gigawatt as AMD Competes on Cost
NVIDIA says its revenue opportunity increases to $40 billion per gigawatt with Vera Rubin, up from $25 billion with Blackwell. Few hardware companies have that kind of pricing power. AMD says Helios delivers up to 30% more tokens per dollar than the competition. Anthropic will deploy up to two gigawatts of MI450 GPUs in Helios racks. However, the first gigawatt only begins deploying in the first half of 2027.
NVIDIA has weak spots too. Days sales outstanding extended to 60 days from 45, and Huang acknowledged that critics may call its funding of AI labs “circular financing.” NVIDIA and other AI stocks sank on an OpenAI revenue report on October 8.
November 17 Puts Vera Rubin on the Scoreboard
NVIDIA reports again on November 17. I will be watching whether Vera Rubin makes about 20% of data center revenue in Q3 as forecast. I also want to see how investors react to gross margins that management expects to bottom at 71% to 72% in Q4. For AMD, keep an eye on the Helios step-up promised for Q4 2026 and on whether gross margin holds near 56%.
Why I Lean Toward NVIDIA to Finish 2026
AMD had an excellent quarter, but its stock has already rallied 183.95% year to date and trades near 40x forward earnings. NVIDIA trades closer to 25x after a 23.23% gain. It also has a platform already shipping and an earnings report before year-end. With so little time left in 2026, I prefer the company whose growth is showing up now.
Patient growth investors have a stronger case for AMD, because Helios, MI500 and the Anthropic volumes all arrive in 2027. The signs that tend to show up years before a monster chip run are the ones we cataloged in a free playbook, here. I would change my view if Helios scales faster than forecast, or if NVIDIA’s financing ties turn into credit trouble.
