Simply Put, Palantir Remains a Valuation Trap
Palantir's revenue is exploding and its AI pitch has Wall Street buzzing, yet the analysts who cover it most closely see almost no room left to run. Here is what happens when a great business and a dangerous price tag…
Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ:PLTR | PLTR Price Prediction) trades at $200.97. The company is growing revenue at 93%, yet the stock trades at a multiple that leaves no room for a single miss.
Palantir sells data and AI software through its Gotham, Foundry, and AIP platforms to defense agencies and large enterprises. Its pitch is “AI sovereignty,” which lets customers run models on their own data without giving their know-how to frontier labs. The stock has climbed 15.96% over the past month and sits just below its 52-week high of $212.94.
149% U.S. Commercial Growth Hands Bulls a Powerful Case
Revenue reached $1.94 billion last quarter, up 92.8% year over year. U.S. commercial revenue jumped 149% to $764 million. EPS of $0.41 beat the $0.346 consensus, free cash flow hit $1.22 billion, and net dollar retention rose to 157%.
Management raised full-year revenue guidance to $8.150 billion to $8.158 billion, which works out to roughly 82% growth. Analysts have raised forecasts: the 2027 EPS consensus is $2.3515, up from $2.0945 90 days ago. CEO Alex Karp called the quarter “otherworldly”.
A 180x Earnings Multiple Prices In Years of Flawless Execution
Palantir trades at 180 times trailing earnings, 81 times sales, and 85x the 2027 EPS consensus. Its free cash flow yield is just 0.45%.
Expectations have risen sharply, and Karp said he wants growth “at a rate equal or above to what we have in U.S. commercial for the next 18 months”. Management warned of a significant third-quarter expense ramp. Stock-based compensation ran $265 million, and SpaceX gains added $0.03 to GAAP EPS. Two Sigma and D. E. Shaw both trimmed stakes in the June quarter.
Rising Estimates Turn the Next Report Into a Key Test
Estimate momentum has been strong: the September-quarter EPS estimate drew 22 upward revisions over 30 days and zero downward ones. Consensus revenue of about $2.18 billion already tops Palantir’s own $2.160 billion to $2.164 billion guide. That makes the next report the deciding test.
If U.S. commercial growth holds above the 134% full-year guide, the upside argument gets stronger. If it slows down, the multiple loses its support.
Wall Street Sees Barely 2% Upside From Here
The consensus price target is $205.27. That implies just 2.1% upside, based on 31 analysts. The ratings break down this way:
- Strong Buy: 1
- Buy: 19
- Hold: 9
- Sell: 1
- Strong Sell: 1
Palantir is up 13.06% year to date, barely ahead of the S&P 500’s 12.87%. Over one year it gained 11.81%, behind the index’s 16.22%.
Palantir’s Valuation Keeps Perfection Priced In
At $200.97, Palantir’s business is exceptional, and the price already reflects that. At 85x forward earnings, shareholders carry all the risk of a slowdown and get little reward if growth simply meets plan.
The most likely path lower runs through the next two reports. Expenses are rising in the third quarter, and consensus already sits above guidance. A quarter that merely meets estimates could pull shares toward the 200-day moving average at $152.41.
The thesis breaks if 2027 estimates rose toward the high forecast of $2.90 and international commercial revenue, which grew just 26%, starts to speed up. Growing earnings would then reduce the multiple without a drop in price.
Palantir has earned its growth story, but at this valuation the stock price leaves room only for perfection. Riding a mania can still pay, provided the exit is planned in advance (we laid out both sides in a free bubble survivor’s handbook).
