Broadcom’s Growth Vs. Risk Tug-of-War Continues to Confound
Broadcom's AI revenue is exploding and its forward valuation looks surprisingly cheap, yet analysts keep cutting estimates and the CFO refuses to cap a set of off-balance-sheet guarantees that could reshape the entire investment case.
Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO | AVGO Price Prediction) trades at $329.17. Its AI growth is accelerating, and so are the customer concentration, margin compression and financing exposure that come with it.
Broadcom designs custom AI accelerators (XPUs), networking silicon and, through VMware, infrastructure software. AI chips made up 56% of total revenue last quarter, up from 49% in Q2. Revenue rose 85.5% YoY to $29.59B. Even so, the stock is down 4.37% year to date and sits well below its 52-week high of $493.28. The latest development is a $63 billion financing structure from major banks and Blackstone (NYSE:BX) to fund AI compute built in partnership with Broadcom.
A $230 Billion AI Roadmap Makes 19x Forward Earnings Look Cheap
AI semiconductor revenue reached $16.70B, up 221% YoY. Q4 guidance calls for $21.7B, up 236%, on total revenue of $34.8B. Management expects AI revenue of roughly $115 billion in fiscal 2027 and $230 billion in fiscal 2028, along with EPS above $30 in fiscal 2028. Anthropic, OpenAI and other labs are scaling custom silicon that Broadcom says runs workloads at “half the cost of a GPU.”
Bulls point out that the stock trades at a forward P/E of 19, compared with a trailing 43, and a PEG of 0.361. Free cash flow hit $13.67B, or 46% of revenue, and EPS has exceeded estimates for a ninth straight quarter.
Six Customers, Shrinking Gross Margins and Off-Balance-Sheet Strings
The AI outlook rests on six XPU customers. Several of them depend on outside financing to build data centers. Broadcom may offer residual value guarantees, and the CFO declined to cap them: “I can’t give you an overarching maximum or what each will look like.” Gross margin is guided to about 73%, down from 78% a year ago, as XPUs and memory content reduce the mix.
Estimates are drifting lower. Over the past 30 days, fiscal 2027 EPS saw 26 downward revisions against 13 upward. Deployments also hinge on customers securing land, power and buildings (we featured seven suppliers behind that expansion, from power to cooling to networking, in a free report on the non-chip AI stocks). Meanwhile, total liabilities stand at $88.46B.
December’s Earnings Report Holds the Next Proof Point
Execution remains excellent. Operating margin reached 67.9%, and software revenue grew 29%. The stock still trades below its 50-day ($356.76) and 200-day ($367.82) moving averages, which signals unresolved doubt. Investors should look for the fiscal fourth quarter to deliver the guided AI revenue, keep gross margin near 73%, and spell out the size of any guarantees.
Wall Street Sees 61% Upside While Shares Trail the S&P 500
The consensus target of $529.10 implies 60.7% upside. Targets are just one metric and carry no guarantee. Coverage from 50 analysts breaks down as follows:
- Strong Buy: 7
- Buy: 40
- Hold: 3
- Sell: 0
Over one year, Broadcom dropped 6.36% and the S&P 500 gained 13%. Over the past month, the stock lost 6.7%, compared with the index’s 0.78% decline. EV/EBITDA is 33.92 and beta is 1.476.
Broadcom’s Outlook Hinges on Proving the $115 Billion Path
At $329.17, Broadcom’s case rests on execution.
The growth case is real, and 19x forward earnings looks reasonable if fiscal 2027 lands near plan. But management calls the $115 billion figure trajectory guidance that won’t be updated each quarter. That leaves investors relying on deployment timing they cannot see.
A stronger case would need a clean Q4, a stable operating margin near 66%, and limited guarantee disclosures. The case would weaken if gross margin declines faster than guided, a major lab delays its deployments, or estimate cuts keep piling up. The stock could rerate quickly on a strong report, while financing risk could spread into Broadcom’s balance sheet.
Broadcom’s roadmap supports a premium valuation, and the coming quarters will show whether execution matches it.
