Recently, four major institutions have shared their price predictions for Ethereum (ETH) (CRYPTO:ETH), revealing a wide range of estimates. Citi sets the lowest target at $3,028, while VanEck aims for an ambitious $6,000. Standard Chartered sits in the middle with a target of $4,000, and Bernstein forecasts $5,500. Hitting VanEck’s target requires about eight times the gain that Citi’s target needs.

As of October 7, 2026, Ether trades at $2,617, having dropped 3% in the last day and approximately 47% from its peak of $4,946. Given these differing projections, which ones seem realistic?

Citi recently updated its 12-month forecast on October 1, increasing its target from $2,240 to $3,028. This means Ether needs to gain around 16% to reach it. Unlike the other forecasts, Citi’s target is set for October 2027, allowing Ether about 10 more months than the year-end targets.

Standard Chartered set its year-end target of $4,000 in late May 2026, when Ether was trading below $2,000. To meet this target, Ether needs to increase by roughly 53%. The bank also suggested a longer-term target of $40,000 by the end of 2030, making it unique among the four with a multi-year vision alongside its year-end projection.

The higher targets come from Bernstein at $5,500 and VanEck at $6,000. Ether would need to rise by about 110% and 129%, respectively, to meet these levels—meaning it would have to more than double before December 31. Additionally, both targets exceed Ether’s previous all-time high of $4,946, requiring a new peak.

Why Citi’s $3,028 Ethereum Target Is Within Reach

Citi’s target is close enough to the current price that normal price fluctuations could easily bring Ether above it. For instance, Ether rose about 71% in the third quarter of 2026 alone, suggesting a 16% rise isn’t out of reach. Since Citi’s timeline extends to October 2027, Ether has significantly more time than under the other forecasts.

In contrast, the higher targets demand much larger price jumps in a short period. Reaching Bernstein’s or VanEck’s numbers by year-end would require Ether to exceed its record gain in just one quarter.

Another factor at play is supply. Unlike Bitcoin, Ethereum has no maximum supply, which means that as new coins are continuously added to the network, the total amount of value buyers must support to maintain the same prices increases. While large purchases, such as BitMine’s acquisition of 12,500 ETH, can help absorb some new supply, the circulating supply, currently around 122 million ETH, keeps growing.

Why $4,000 Is the Ethereum Price to Watch Before Year-End

Standard Chartered’s $4,000 target serves as a pivotal point between a recovery and a more substantial breakout. If Ether remains below $4,000, it’s merely clawing its way back to prices seen in 2025. However, breaching this mark could open the door to the higher targets set by Bernstein and VanEck, although Ether must first overcome its previous record of $4,946.

With this in mind, $4,000 is a crucial level to monitor. If Ether closes above this mark before December 31, it may reignite interest in the higher price predictions. Conversely, a year-end close below it would leave all three year-end forecasts short.

Which Ethereum Price Target Is Realistic by the End of 2026?

In conclusion, Citi’s target of $3,028 appears most attainable, while VanEck’s $6,000 target seems least plausible. With a modest required gain of 16% and an extended timeline, Citi’s forecast is grounded in reality. In comparison, VanEck’s projection demands more than double the current price in just a few months.

Even if a forecaster misses their year-end prediction, they may still have the right long-term outlook, as Standard Chartered’s ambitious $40,000 target for 2030 suggests a forward-thinking approach. For those considering a purchase at around $2,600, the required gains suggest focusing on Citi’s target, as only a significant move above $4,000 could put the higher estimates back in play.
