For "Incredibles 2", A Shot At $150 Million Open

Some industry executives believe the new “Incredibles 2” could have the largest opening weekend for an animated film, ever. It has been 14 years since the original was released, a very, very long time between first film and sequel. That means what could be a $150 first weekend will include tickets sold to many moviegoers who did not see the first, a special feat all on its own.

Incredibles 2 is about a family of five superheros–two parents and three children. It pokes fun at the genre, which makes its success all the more extraordinary. The father Bob is overweight and middle aged. He seems to be a good candidate for retirement in the suburbs. As is the case in many superhero movies, a villain forces the family to revive their secret powers to battle a villain. It is a plot line as old as superhero movies are themselves.

According to Box Office Mojo:

As for a forecast, our expectations range from $145-155 million for the weekend. The pent up demand from fans as well as the lack of major family films as of late is a confluence of events setting Incredibles 2 up for a massive opening and strong performance throughout the summer should audiences take to the film the same as critics, with it currently holding a 79 on Metacritic and a 95% on RottenTomatoes.

The 95% is extraordinarily high.

Although the movie will not break the all time record opening weekend box office figure, it will still post an extraordinary number. If released in 2010, it would have been the have posted the best weekend of the year, ahead of “Iron Man 2” The No.1 box office weekend figure for 2018 is “Avengers: Infinity War” at $257 million, which was the all time record for the period

Incredibles 2 is another win for Walt Disney’s (NYSE: DIS) studios which co-produced the movie with Pixar. It had an extraordinary 34% of 2018 market share among all studios ahead of the weekend. Incredibles 2 will push that to well above 35%, ahead of No.2, 20th Century Fox at 13.4%

Incredibles 2 may be an odd superhero movie. That has not kept if from being wildly successful
