Cars That Have Been Completely Redesigned for 2020

In the fiercely competitive, high-stakes automotive industry, companies often invest hundreds of millions of dollars into the development of an all-new car or truck model before the first vehicle rolls off the assembly line.

And if the vehicle turns out to be a lemon or fails to excite consumers, the financial losses can be staggering. This is why the history of the car industry is a graveyard of failed ventures.

For the 2020 model year, automakers are releasing to the U.S. market more than 30 popular models that have undergone major redesigns. Owing to their immense popularity, about half of these remodeled cars are SUVs or crossovers (smaller SUVs) that have undergone significant changes in the way they look and the features they offer. One of them, the Ford Bronco, is coming back after more than two decades. Some sedans, like the BMW 3 Series and the Nissan Sentra, have been renovated inside and out in order to maintain their popularity among consumers.

The following is a list of mainstream automobiles that have undergone major redesigns for the 2020 model year. Some have already hit the market, and all of them will be available after the holiday season.

The list of automobiles for mass consumption that have undergone major redesigns for the 2020 model year was provided by Cox Automotive and verified using reviews from vehicle pricing and auto industry research company Kelley Blue Book. The list includes only cars that are available or will soon be available in the U.S. for the 2020 model year. It does not include super-luxury sports cars or heavy-duty trucks and passenger/cargo vans typically used for commercial purposes.

Because of the steep overhead cost of car manufacturing, automakers don’t introduce completely new models too often. They do, however, tweak existing models regularly, even from one model year to the next. It costs much less to redesign a body and add new features to a successful car, SUV or pickup truck, than it does to start over from scratch. These are the cars so hot they’re out of stock.
