Sony Announces PS4 Launch Titles

The highly anticipated PlayStation 4, or PS4, from Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) is scheduled to hit stores November 15. And Sony has announced the line-up of 22 games that initially will be available for the PS4. It was part of an enormous FAQ released by the company’s official PlayStation blog this week. Five of the launch titles are first-party games, 12 are third-party games and five come from indie developers.

Games on the list that are exclusive to PlayStation include Killzone Shadow Fall, Knack, Resogun, Contrast and Super Motherload. But the racing game Driveclub, anticipated to be a launch title, has been delayed.

Other first-party games include Flower and Sound Shapes. Third-party games include the recently added Angry Birds Star Wars, as well as Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Call of Duty: Ghosts, DC Universe Online, FIFA 14 and others. Other indie titles include Tiny Brains and Warframe.

Sony notes the list is subject to change. A number of other games are set to roll out by the end of the year and into early next year.

Microsoft Corp.’s (NASDAQ: MSFT) Xbox One also launches in November and will have 23 games initially. The exclusives at launch include Dead Rising 3, Forza Motorsport 5, RYSE: Son of Rome, Killer Instinct, Powerstar Golf and Crimson Dragon.

The PS4 FAQ also seems to suggest that games will no longer be available on conventional DVDs. Instead, “physical PS4 games come on Blu-ray Disc, the best form of media capable of handling the large amounts of data that PS4 requires.” If regular DVDs as game storage format are on their way out, then it is the end of an era.
