Albertsons beat adjusted earnings estimates with EPS of $0.36, but those headline numbers obscure a far more troubled picture underneath.
GAAP net income fell to $51.5 million, down 69% from a year ago, as impairment charges, higher interest expense and gross margin compression from delivery costs and elevated shrink weighed on results.
Management pulled its full-year fiscal 2026 outlook entirely rather than revise it, and no new guidance will be issued until a comprehensive business review is complete, with a refreshed financial framework and turnaround plan expected alongside the Q4 earnings call.
CEO Susan Morris announced a restructuring called ACI Edge, consolidating 11 divisions into four regions and centralizing center-store merchandising. In her own words: "We are launching a comprehensive business review to speed up improvements in Albertsons' performance and tackle even harder a cost structure we can no longer afford."
Identical sales declined 0.8% in the quarter, pointing to ongoing pressure on customer traffic and basket size. Digital sales grew 11%, though that growth carried higher delivery and handling costs that ate into margins. Shareholders' equity fell 53.47% year over year, leaving the balance sheet more stretched heading into the turnaround.
