The first profitable quarter in two years rests on licensing: a $613 million recognition on the Bristol Myers Squibb pumitamig deal carried the beat. Track the oncology launch timeline rather than the headline numbers.

BioNTech's adjusted EPS of $1.76 for Q3 2026 beat expectations, but a $613 million out-licensing recognition tied to the Bristol Myers Squibb pumitamig partnership, triggered when BMS's first cancellation option lapsed, provided the bulk of the lift. Strip that out and the underlying business looks far more modest.

Out-licensing revenue of $683 million more than offset a continuing deterioration in COVID-19 vaccine sales, which fell 35% year over year. BioNTech swung to an IFRS net profit from a year-earlier loss, though a prior-year patent litigation charge that did not recur flattered the comparison.

Operating cash flow was negative $129.8 million for the quarter, a reminder that the cash profit story is not as clean as the income statement suggests. R&D spending rose, driven by the immuno-oncology and ADC programs that BioNTech is betting its post-COVID future on. Cash on hand funds those programs, but rising expenses will persist.

Pumitamig is the asset to track, with seven global registrational trials running across lung, breast, colorectal and gastric cancers and a new Gilead collaboration announced in October 2026 testing it alongside sacituzumab govitecan in first-line triple-negative breast cancer. Interim gotistobart Phase 3 data are expected before the end of 2026. Setbacks: the BNT122 colorectal trial was terminated after an overall survival imbalance, and AHEAD-MERIT missed its progression-free survival endpoint.

BioNTech repurchased 3,344,396 ADSs during the quarter under its $1 billion buyback program authorized in May 2026. The buyback signals management confidence, but the oncology pipeline launch timeline should anchor the thesis given the one-time licensing windfall.
