The Dow Jones Industrial Average outpaced both broader indexes with a gain of roughly 0.98% on the day, while the S&P 500 finished at 7,812.85. That kind of outperformance from the Dow typically signals investors rotating toward the cyclical, old-economy names that carry heavier weight in that index.
The Nasdaq Composite also closed higher, up about 0.66%, putting all three major benchmarks in the green. Still, the spread between the Dow's gain and the Nasdaq's tells you something about where conviction sat today: buyers favored industrials and financials over the growth names that have led for much of the year.
The S&P ground higher through the session and held its gains rather than giving them back into the close. That accumulation without a late fade tends to be a more durable signal than a spike-and-retreat move.
Rate-hike chatter is back in the conversation, and a Dow-led rally in that environment is worth tracking closely. Cyclicals can hold up when rates rise if the economy is strong enough to justify them, so the market's willingness to rotate into those names says something about growth expectations.
