The S&P 500 opened Thursday up 79 points, or about 1.1%, to 7,395 after closing the prior session at 7,316. That gap carried the index above the 7,400 level for the first time, a milestone driven by broad buying tied to an active earnings season and particular momentum in mega-cap technology names.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average also rose at the open, adding roughly 0.6%, while Nasdaq Composite data was not immediately available. The buying was widespread enough to lift the broader index rather than concentrate gains in a single pocket of the market.

Traders will be watching whether the index can hold the 7,400 level through the session, given that the chart shows several retreats from intraday highs over recent days, including a drop back to the 7,408 range late last week before the latest advance.
