The FTSE 100 closed down 1.38%, a meaningful single-day loss for London's blue-chip benchmark, though the least severe decline among the major European indexes on the day.

The DAX in Frankfurt fell 1.6% and the CAC 40 in Paris dropped nearly 2%, so the selling pressure was broad and continental. All three of Europe's flagship indexes moving together this sharply points to a shared macro concern.

The FTSE opened with modest gains before turning negative midday and slid through the afternoon, pointing to sellers in control with no late-session relief.
