Starting from the same $10,000 on October 29, 2021, Palo Alto Networks turned that stake into $44,853 over five years. Fortinet also gained, but its ending value left a dollar gap of more than $24,000 between the two positions.

Both companies operate squarely in enterprise cybersecurity, a sector that broadly benefited from rising corporate security budgets and a persistent threat landscape across the period. Same tailwinds, same five-year window, yet one investor more than quadrupled their money while the other roughly doubled it.

Palo Alto Networks did not climb in a straight line, dipping below its starting value at several points. Investors who held through those drawdowns captured the full run as the stock climbed steadily in the back half of the period.

Fortinet's journey was similarly uneven, with the position spending extended stretches below the original $10,000 mark. A recovery arrived later in the five-year window, but it was not enough to close the gap with Palo Alto Networks.

The comparison underscores how much stock selection within a sector matters, even when the macro setup favors every name in it. A bet on cybersecurity as a theme would have looked very different depending entirely on which company an investor chose to represent it.
