Humana raised its full-year adjusted EPS floor to at least $9.50 from at least $9.00 after a smaller quarterly loss than Wall Street expected, with the Insurance benefit ratio landing at 93.7% versus management's own guidance of slightly above 94%. That is a rare upward revision in a group where peers keep flagging rising medical costs.

Humana reported a third-quarter adjusted loss of $0.70 per share, beating the Wall Street consensus estimate of roughly a $1.00 loss. Revenue came in at $41.16 billion, ahead of what analysts had expected. The quarter extended the company's streak of topping EPS forecasts to five consecutive quarters.

The outperformance came from the Insurance segment's benefit ratio, which measures how much of premium revenue goes toward paying medical claims. It landed at 93.7% for the quarter, better than management's own guidance of slightly above 94%. In a business where every fraction of a percentage point translates into large dollar swings, that gap matters.

The guidance revision followed. Humana raised its full-year 2026 adjusted EPS floor to at least $9.50 from at least $9.00. Upward revisions have been scarce across the managed-care sector, where peers have repeatedly flagged rising medical costs, making Humana's move stand out.

The quarter was not without pressure points. Favorable prior-period reserve development, which had cushioned results in the year-ago period to the tune of $275 million, shrank to $67 million in Q3 2026. The Insurance segment also posted a GAAP loss from operations of $303 million, compared with income of $251 million a year earlier, reflecting ongoing Medicare Advantage cost headwinds and the BY 2026 Star Ratings revenue drag.

Looking ahead, management guided for a Q4 Insurance benefit ratio just above 95.5%, reflecting typical seasonal patterns as more members use benefits late in the year. The company also set a longer-term target of a sustainable pre-tax margin of at least 3% in 2028, and a virtual investor update is scheduled for December 10, 2026, where further detail on that path is expected.
