Anyone with European equity exposure is having a different morning depending on which side of the Channel they sit. The FTSE 100 opened down just 0.13%, a relatively contained slip, while the DAX and the CAC 40 put continental benchmarks under noticeably heavier pressure than London.
The FTSE 100 is currently trading at 13,967, a modest pullback that sits within a broader slide carrying the index down from higher levels in recent weeks, so while today's open looks calm compared to its European peers, the index has not been immune to the recent drift lower.
The divergence between London and Frankfurt is the more immediate story for portfolio positioning. A near 1% drop in the DAX without a comparable move in the FTSE 100 suggests selling pressure is concentrated in continental European names. Investors overweight European industrials, which tend to be more heavily represented in German indices, are absorbing a meaningfully different session than those tilted toward the UK's large-cap mix.
What to keep an eye on as the session develops is whether the DAX weakness stays contained or begins to pull more broadly on European sentiment. If the gap between London and Frankfurt narrows because the FTSE 100 catches down rather than the DAX recovers, the picture for UK-focused portfolios changes considerably.
