The FTSE 100 opened Monday at 14,297, shedding roughly 2 points from Friday's close while peers on the continent pushed higher. Every reversal matters while the index threads its way up from recent lows.
Frankfurt's DAX added 0.6% at the open and Paris's CAC 40 gained 0.55%, marking the morning's weakness as a London-specific story. With two of the region's other major indices rising and London flat, the divergence points to something particular to the UK.
That divergence traces to unresolved domestic questions around the deficit and interest rates, pressures the eurozone indices are not carrying in the same way. Until those questions find clearer answers, UK-listed equities face a ceiling that their European counterparts do not.
The level to keep an eye on is Friday's close of 14,299. A failure to reclaim it through the session would confirm that London is lagging the regional tone.
