The S&P 500 added 51.69 points to close at 7,489.67, a gain of about 0.7% on the day. The move was part of a broad Friday advance, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising 0.52% and the Nasdaq Composite leading the charge with a 1.1% jump.
The day's session was not without turbulence. The S&P 500 spent a stretch of the morning in negative territory, dipping as low as roughly half a percent below the open before buyers stepped in around midday and pushed the index steadily higher through the afternoon close.
