Affirm and Upstart both pitch themselves as technology-first lenders rewriting the consumer credit playbook, yet three years from the same starting line they landed in completely different places. A $10,000 position in Affirm taken on August 14, 2023 is worth $51,765 today, while the identical position in Upstart is worth $8,894.
Affirm's position grew to more than five times the original investment while Upstart's investors are still carrying a loss. The $42,871 difference between the two final values shows how two fintech lenders in the same industry can diverge over an identical holding period.

Affirm's path was not a straight line upward, with the position retreating from its starting value at points before extended rallies took it far higher. Upstart followed a similar early pattern but never sustained a recovery of the same magnitude.
For an investor weighing either stock today, the three-year record is a reminder that sector tailwinds do not distribute evenly across companies in the same space. Both names operate in fintech lending and faced the same interest-rate backdrop, yet the outcome spread reached nearly $43,000 on a single $10,000 starting position.
