The S&P 500 ended the session down just 2.6 points, closing at 7,804.6 and holding the 7,800 level that had been in focus throughout the day.
The session's real pressure showed up in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which shed 0.22%, while the Nasdaq Composite also slipped. The S&P's composure came from offsetting moves within its membership.
Intraday, the S&P dipped as deep as 0.26% below the prior close of 7,807.2 before recovering to finish fractionally lower. That late-session recovery narrowed the loss, but sellers were active for much of the afternoon.
The index-level calm masks where the day's damage actually landed. A flat headline number alongside peer indexes down a quarter of a percent or more signals that selling was concentrated in specific corners of the market.
