The S&P 500 closed at 7,738.82 on August 5, 2026, up just 2.33 points — a gain of roughly 0.03% from the prior close of 7,736.49. That kind of stillness at the index level can be misleading, and today it was: two of the market's most-watched benchmarks were moving in sharply different directions underneath the surface.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.87%, adding 472.98 points, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.61%. That divergence is the signature of a classic rotation trade, where money shifts away from the growth and technology names that dominate the Nasdaq and moves into the more traditional, dividend-paying blue chips that make up the Dow.

Because the S&P 500 holds both kinds of stocks, the gains and losses roughly canceled each other out at the index level. Investors watching only the S&P's headline number would have missed one of the more meaningful single-day sector shifts of recent sessions.
