Tokyo's benchmark opened 0.57% lower on October 15 as traders positioned defensively ahead of the Bank of Japan's rate decision.

A policy hike that pushes the yen higher would squeeze exporters, whose overseas earnings shrink in yen terms when the currency strengthens, making the BOJ meeting a direct earnings-risk event for a large segment of the index.

The pressure at the open extends a pullback that has been building over recent sessions.

Exporter-heavy sectors are the names to watch as the BOJ decision approaches, since hawkish language alone would add further downside pressure to the index.
