A one-time $47.3 million income tax charge flipped Vertex to a GAAP net loss of $46.6 million, masking an adjusted quarter that beat consensus by 17% and prompted management to raise full-year revenue and EBITDA guidance. Adjusted EBITDA margin widened to 30.4% from 22.6%.

Vertex reported adjusted EPS of $0.26 for the third quarter of 2026, beating expectations. That beat extended the indirect tax software company's streak of consensus EPS beats to seven consecutive quarters, and it was the largest single-quarter outperformance in that run.

The headline GAAP numbers looked alarming in isolation. A $47.3 million income tax charge flipped what was otherwise a profitable quarter into a GAAP net loss of $46.6 million. That charge was a one-time item, and it had no bearing on the adjusted operating performance that investors were closely watching.

Revenue of $213.3 million grew 11% year over year, beating expectations, with cloud revenue rising 20.4% year over year. Annual recurring revenue climbed 11.7%, reinforcing the durability of Vertex's subscription base.

Adjusted EBITDA margin expanded sharply to 30.4% from 22.6% a year earlier, a move management credited to its Value Creation Plan, a restructuring effort aimed at building a leaner operating model. CEO Christopher Young described the quarter as 'clear evidence that we are delivering on our commitments to investors,' pointing to a stabilized core business and improved financial profile.

Looking ahead, management raised its full-year 2026 revenue outlook to a range of $828.9 million to $830.9 million and lifted adjusted EBITDA guidance. Young cited continued e-invoicing momentum and AI-driven efficiencies as the key factors underpinning that confidence.
