A fifth consecutive earnings beat is doing little to hide the real problem: U.S. same-restaurant sales fell 5.7% and adjusted EBITDA dropped 17.8%. Management is spending into the new Dave's Way turnaround, with $11.9 million of consulting fees already in the quarter's costs.

Wendy's posted adjusted EPS of $0.13 for the third quarter of 2026, beating expectations against a Wall Street consensus of $0.09 and extending its streak of beating earnings expectations to five consecutive quarters. Revenue of $546.99 million also came in above expectations, though it still slipped 0.5% from the same period a year ago, with lower franchise royalty revenue dragging on the top line.

The headline beats are obscuring a more troubling operational picture. U.S. same-restaurant sales fell 5.7%, with global systemwide sales and adjusted EBITDA both declining as well. G&A expenses surged, partly tied to third-party consulting fees for the company's newly launched Dave's Way transformation strategy.

Dave's Way is the central bet management is making to reverse the traffic decline. CEO Bob Wright described it as a multi-year strategy built on five strategic pillars, with tests already underway on menu enhancements, marketing execution, and digital acceleration. The company also appointed a new Chief Marketing and Customer Growth Officer, Tariq Hassan, as part of the push.

One significant piece of the turnaround involves breakfast. The company revised its breakfast approach to be location-specific, and CFO Steve Cirulis said that decision would unlock up to $200 million in system-level restaurant EBITDA. Wendy's also signed a letter of intent to acquire up to 163 restaurants from Meritage Hospitality Group, though that deal remains subject to a definitive agreement, competing offers, and court approval.

The balance sheet offers some buffer. Wendy's reported roughly $413 million in cash and $174 million of year-to-date free cash flow, which management cited as evidence the company has the financial capacity to fund Dave's Way. No shares were repurchased during the quarter, leaving approximately $35 million available under the existing buyback authorization, which expires in February 2027. The company declared a quarterly dividend of $0.07 per share, payable December 15 to holders of record December 1.
