As seen on the 24/7 Wall St. homepage on October 14, 2026.
Rising yields squeeze the rate-sensitive corners of the market first: REITs, utilities and long-duration bond funds. With Fed officials still floating another hike this year, the pain trade is in anything priced for cuts.

Hedgeye flagged the move on October 14, 2026, and rising yields hit the most rate-sensitive corners of the market hardest and fastest.
REITs, utilities, and long-duration bond funds are the first to feel the squeeze when yields climb, because their valuations rest on the assumption that borrowing costs stay manageable and that future cash flows are worth discounting at a lower rate.
With Fed officials still floating another hike this year, anything priced for cuts is caught on the wrong side of that trade, making the current yield move more than a short-term fluctuation.
The longer yields stay elevated, the more pressure builds on sectors investors had treated as safe havens.
