MFA Financial, Inc. (NYSE: MFA) is a specialty finance company structured as an internally-managed real estate investment trust (REIT) that invests in U.S. residential mortgage assets. The company's investment portfolio spans Non-QM loans, Agency mortgage-backed securities, single-family rental loans, single-family and multifamily transitional loans, and seasoned re-performing/non-performing loans. Through its wholly-owned subsidiary Lima One Capital, MFA originates and services business purpose loans for real estate investors, including short-term bridge, construction, and rehab loans as well as 30-year rental loans on residential properties. MFA focuses primarily on credit-sensitive subsectors of the residential mortgage market, seeking to avoid direct competition with banks and government-sponsored enterprises. The company has distributed over $5 billion in dividends to stockholders since its 1998 IPO and finances its portfolio through a combination of securitized debt, repurchase agreements, and other financing arrangements.
