Did NVAX Beat Earnings? Q3 2025 Results

Novavax delivered a mixed third quarter for fiscal 2025, beating revenue expectations by a wide margin while falling well short on the bottom line. The vaccine maker posted revenue of $70.44 million, exceeding the $44.87 million consensus by 56.99%, though sales still declined 16.6% year-over-year as the company's commercial model underwent a fundamental shift; Sanofi's assumption of lead commercial responsibility for Nuvaxovid eliminated direct product sales entirely, replacing them with licensing and partnership revenue that grew 33% to $48.00 million. On the earnings side, however, Novavax reported a loss of $1.25 per share, missing the $-0.9167 consensus by 36.36%, weighed down by $126.00 million in non-cash charges including a $97.00 million asset impairment tied to Maryland facility consolidation transactions that are expected to generate $230.00 million in future cost savings over 11 years. Looking ahead, management raised its full-year 2025 adjusted revenue framework to $1.04 billion-$1.06 billion while narrowing expense guidance, signaling growing confidence in the Sanofi partnership as the backbone of its restructured business model.

Key Takeaways
  • Sanofi partnership milestones of $225 million earned year-to-date
  • Transition of lead commercial role to Sanofi for 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccination season
  • 55% reduction in SG&A expenses from elimination of commercial infrastructure
  • R&D reimbursement from Sanofi covering approximately 47% of R&D expenses
  • FDA approval of Nuvaxovid 2025-2026 Formula with extended six-month shelf life in pre-filled syringe

“We have continued the steady transformation of Novavax and are proud of our progress this quarter.”

Forward Guidance & Outlook

Novavax raised its Full Year 2025 Adjusted Total Revenue framework to $1,040–$1,060 million (up from $1,000–$1,050 million), including $610 million in Nuvaxovid product sales, $35–$45 million in adjusted supply sales, and $395–$405 million in adjusted licensing, royalties and other revenue. Non-GAAP Combined R&D and SG&A expenses guidance was narrowed to $440–$460 million (from $450–$475 million). Sanofi Supply Sales, Sanofi Royalties, and Sanofi Influenza-COVID-19 Combination and Matrix-M Related Milestones are excluded from the revenue framework as Novavax is reliant on Sanofi's sales forecasts. Novavax is eligible for royalties in the high teens to low twenties percent on Sanofi sales, up to $350 million in Phase 3 and commercial launch milestones for influenza-COVID combination products, and up to $200 million per new Matrix-M vaccine in launch and sales milestones.
