A 36-inch natural gas pipeline exploded shortly before 1:00 p.m. in Sissonville, West Virginia, which is located about 15 miles north of the state capital, Charleston. No injuries or fatalities have been reported by several fires were said to be burning and Interstate 77 was shut down as a precaution.
The owner of the pipeline has not been identified, but the explosion occurred near a pipeline and compression station owned by NiSource Inc. (NYSE: NI). A company spokesman said the company was still gathering facts about the incident.
Work crews have partially shut down the gas supply to the pipeline.
