Goldman, Please Give Back the Money

Paying back TARP cash is good for Goldman, better for the country.

Conventional wisdom over the last week has gone from “it’s outrageous that folks on the government dole are getting hundreds of millions in bonuses” to “let’s stop worrying about millions in bonuses and get back to worrying about billions in bailouts.” But the bonus flap may have one extremely salutary effect: It brings us closer—a lot closer—to the day when some of the big banks that got government aid start giving it back.
