All this talk about the U.S. becoming the next Europe presumes that we’re the same as the Europeans. That’s not remotely true. While most Americans can claim a European bloodline, they descend from people who rejected Europe’s statist ways. As descendants of those who had the courage to leave the familiar and comfortable, Americans are remarkably entrepreneurial and rejecting of the status quo. We’re the opposite of the people so many analysts suggest we’re becoming, and that’s why the lurch toward bigger government under Presidents Bush and Obama may prove good over the long-term for reviving the natural desire among Americans to be lightly governed.
