The latest figure for the number of users of the Google+ social network from Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) is more than 62 million. The sign-up rate for the Facebook competitor has reached about 625,000 a day, which means that by the end of next year, Google+ could have 400 million users.

Facebook now claims more than 800 million users, so Google+ remains a distant second. Still the sign-up rate is impressive. Google has made it easy to sign-up for Google+ through its Android mobile device operating system. The company said that 3.7 million new Android activations occurred over the Christmas weekend, and that normal daily activations now run around 700,000.

Google+ was first made publicly available in September, so the sign-up rate is nothing short of phenomenal. Whether Google+ can convert these sign-ups to active users who recruit more friends and family and then make some money from the whole enterprise remains to be seen.
