Several media have reported that BMW has pushed ahead of competitors Mercedes and the Toyota (NYSE: TM) luxury brands to take the No. 1 spot in American sales for 2011. The Germany company sold 247,907 cars and light trucks.
The news is bad for Mercedes, which finished in second place, and the perenial leader Lexus which was hampered by production problems caused by the March Japan earthquake. It also dims the prospects of other Japan luxury brands Infiniti, part of Nissan, and Acura, part of Honda (NYSE: HMC)
