Toshiba and LG are in a horse race with other set makers over 3D TV without glasses.  Small formats already exist, but the race is on for the large format 3D television sets of he 44″ to 55″ and even larger which do not require glasses for viewing 3D imaging.  Toshiba has said to be bringing a large format TV of this type later this year and now LG is bringing the 3D TV without glasses war for the consumer as well.  The questions come down to when and at what price, if the technical difficulties can be worked through.  Laptop gamers and smaller TV sets can have some forms of glasses-free 3D gaming and TV watching now, but the fight for this glass-free TV watching has to migrate away from the 3D glasses for this to really catch on.  If you already wear glasses, it is hard to migrate from a “four-eyed” person to a “six-eyed” person.  Even if the current glasses are successful, it looks pretty silly for many (including yours truly) to have glasses on top of glasses.

LG’s 20-inch glasses-free model is going to be followed up this week, but a large-format set is what investors are hoping far.  The other barrier besides wearing silly glasses is of course the cost.  If this TV comes to a 55-inch beta-test version comes next year, at what price will it come?

Will a viewer have to be head-on in front of the TV as well?  And will you have a headache after watching?  These are just some of the additional issue that have to be considered.

3DTVGuide.com also notes from a ways back a Philips model as well.
