Usually board appointments are not major events for companies.  Still, sometimes they matter for a company direction even if they do not generate moves in the stock price.  Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) is naming one of the great names in virtualization to its board of directors.

An SEC filing came after the close showing that the Internet search leader has appointed Diane B. Greene to serve as a member of the Board and the Audit Committee of the Board.

Ms. Greene has been a member of the board of directors of Intuit Inc. (NASDAQ: INTU) since August 2006.  More importantly, she co-founded VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW) in 1998 and was President & CEO from 1998 to 2008.  As part of an EMC Corporation unit, she also was an Executive Vice President of EMC from 2005 to 2008.

Other leadership positions have been at Silicon Graphics Inc., Tandem Computers, Inc., and Sybase Inc., as well as VXtreme, Inc.
