In a period in which airline consolidation is the force which drives the industry, Republic Air will probably dump its Frontier division. The operation has been plagued by losses. Frontier’s problems beg the question of whether it can survive long on its own.
The news shows that Republic is prepared to move against the industry tide to improve its P&L. Recent mega-mergers, set to improve operating efficiency include Northwest and Delta and United Air and Continental. There are rumors that bankrupt AMR, parent of American, could be bought by US Air, to round out its route system
