The 4 Stocks That Lifted the Dow on Thursday

September 10, 2015: Markets opened lower on Thursday after a rather lackluster performance in Asia’s equity markets and more of the same in Europe. Initial claims for unemployment benefits were in line with expectations and oil rose 4% to settle just short of $46 a barrel. Gold also settled higher today after 10 straight losing sessions and a one month low posted on Wednesday. Shortly before the closing bell the DJIA traded up 0.19% for the day, the S&P 500 traded up 0.31%, and the Nasdaq Composite traded up 0.65%.

The DJIA stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close Thursday was Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) which traded up 2.04% at $112.40. The stock’s 52-week range is $92.00 to $134.54. Trading volume was about equal to the daily average of about 57 million. Yesterday’s downturn recovered about half its losses as analysts weighed in on the company’s product announcements..

Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) traded higher by 1.91% at $32.58. The stock’s 52-week range is $27.51 to $36.46. Trading volume was about 20% lower than the daily average of around 24.5 million. The company lost a patent case in the U.K.

UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE: UNH) traded up 1.34% at $116.62. The stock’s 52-week range is $80.72 to $126.21. About 3.5 million shares traded hands today, roughly 25% below the daily average of about 4.5 million. The company had no specific news today.

Merck & Co. Inc. (NYSE: MRK) traded up 1.18% at $52.54. The stock’s 52-week range is $45.69 to $63.62. Trading volume was about 15% above the daily average of around 10.5 million. The company had no specific news today.

Of the Dow 30 stocks 21 are set to close lower today and 9 are on track to close lower. .
