Quick Read

  • Infleqtion (INFQ) surged 10% and Rigetti (RGTI) 9% Friday in a group trade tied to $100 million in proposed federal quantum funding, not company news.

  • The Defiance Quantum ETF (QTUM) gained just 0.5% while D-Wave (QBTS) surged 7%, exposing the fund's minimal pure-play quantum weighting versus larger diversified tech holdings.

Friday’s tape in quantum computing reveals how to own the theme. Five pure-play names are rallying together while the sector’s flagship ETF barely registers the move, and that gap matters more than any single price on the board.

Infleqtion (NYSE:INFQ) stock is up 10% to $13.82 in Friday midday trading, leading the pure-play group higher. Meanwhile, Rigetti Computing (NASDAQ:RGTI) stock is climbing 9% to $17.56, riding the same sector bid. Additionally, IonQ (NYSE:IONQ | IONQ Price Prediction) stock is rallying 7% to $44.62 alongside its peers.

D-Wave Quantum (NYSE:QBTS) stock is advancing 7% to $20.06, matching the group move. Notably, Quantum Computing Inc. (NASDAQ:QUBT) stock is rising 7% to $8.75, rounding out the group’s advance.

However, Defiance Quantum ETF (NASDAQ:QTUM) shares are up 0.5% to $149.87, essentially flat against a group-wide bid in the names it holds. So, what’s driving these quantum-computing stocks today?

Sector Rotation Drives the Group Higher

Friday’s move traces to theme rotation across quantum computing. There’s no Friday announcement at Infleqtion, Rigetti Computing, IonQ, D-Wave Quantum, or Quantum Computing Inc. Five separate pure plays rising together between 7% and 10% is the classic signature of a group trade.

The sector has been positioning around anticipated federal contract flow, including U.S. Department of Commerce letters of intent for up to $100 million in proposed funding to both Infleqtion and Rigetti Computing, plus White House executive orders elevating quantum as a national priority. The bid reflects investors leaning into that pipeline rather than reacting to any single filing or press release.

Fund Divergence Is the Real Signal

Defiance Quantum ETF shares moved 0.5% while five of the pure-play quantum names it holds rose 7% or more. A fund that barely registers a day like this cannot be holding those pure plays at meaningful weight, meaning its exposure sits mostly in larger, more diversified computing and semiconductor businesses.

Year-to-date figures confirm the point. The ETF’s shares were up 37% year to date through Thursday’s close, while every pure play named here was negative over the same stretch. Whatever produced the fund’s 2026 gain, it was not these stocks.

2026 Scorecard Frames the Bounce

Every established pure play came into Friday underwater for the year. IonQ stock was down 7% year to date through Thursday’s close, and Quantum Computing Inc. stock was down 21%.

Rigetti Computing stock was down 27% year to date through Thursday’s close, and D-Wave Quantum stock was down 28%. Infleqtion has no 2026 year-to-date comparison because it listed on February 17, and shares are still trading below the $15.59 debut price after closing Thursday at $12.55.

A 7% to 10% session reads as a bounce off a bad year rather than a breakout. Shares of Infleqtion were up 27% over the past month through Thursday’s close, so the Friday move continues a shorter-term recovery in a name still below its listing level.

Infleqtion’s Backdrop Predates the Move

Infleqtion’s recent news flow predates today’s tape. On August 17, Infleqtion reported updated Q2 2026 results showing revenue of $13.5 million, up 157% year over year, the company said 100% organic and entirely from quantum. The company raised its full-year 2026 revenue outlook to $45.1 million from $43 million.

The revision came from an accounting adjustment on two government contracts, and Infleqtion filed a Form 12b-25 late-filing notice, so the raise is not clean operating upside. GAAP operating loss widened to $29.9 million from $10.4 million a year earlier, while the company said it remains “on track for 30 logical qubits this year”. CEO Matt Kinsella said “the pace of quantum commercialization is accelerating.”

On August 18, Infleqtion opened the Colorado Quantum Innovation Center in Louisville, Colorado as its global headquarters. A day later, Infleqtion outlined a 2027 Colorado field test of its quantum gravity gradiometry technology aimed at mapping critical mineral deposits. Infleqtion systems are already in use by the U.S. Department of War, NASA and the UK Royal Navy.

What to Watch Now

Friday’s rally in quantum is built on anticipation of government contract awards, not on anything announced today. Investors can watch for signs that the Commerce Department’s letters of intent with Infleqtion and Rigetti Computing convert into definitive agreements, since the group’s bid depends on that pipeline landing.

Position sizing should reflect that these pure plays carry high beta, negative earnings, and a fund like Defiance Quantum ETF that is not tracking their day-to-day moves. Traders could look for signs that the group holds its gains into Friday’s close, because a fade would confirm this session is momentum-driven rather than the start of a durable re-rating.
