Quick Read

  • AMD jumped 3% on a Raymond James Strong Buy upgrade to $641, while Intel matched that gain on a disclosed Paul Pelosi trade.

  • NVIDIA climbs 1% ahead of Q2 FY2027 earnings tomorrow, where Polymarket's 96% beat probability still masks binary repricing risk for all chip names.

  • AMD and Intel's triple-digit YTD returns have demolished NVIDIA at 12% and Broadcom at 4%, rewarding turnaround bets over established AI plays.

  • Don't wait: the analyst who called NVIDIA in 2010 just revealed his top 10 AI stocks. See the full list FREE now.

Shares of Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD | AMD Price Prediction) and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) are each up 3% early Tuesday on two unrelated, name-specific catalysts, while the broader chip group rides sector strength at roughly a third of that pace. For the broader context, the iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SOXX) is up 2% to $518.15, while the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:QQQ) is up 0.78% to $7111.84. That gap says semiconductors are leading the broader tech benchmark this morning rather than merely tracking it.

AMD stock is up 3% to $469.89, extending a run that has AMD up 113% year to date (YTD) through Monday’s close. Meanwhile, Intel stock is rising 3% to $90.13, matching AMD’s move on a separate trigger and building on a 136% YTD advance through Monday’s close.

NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) stock is up 1% to $211.14, ticking higher on sector sentiment ahead of its report tomorrow, with NVIDIA up 12% YTD through Monday’s close. Also, Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) stock is climbing 1% to $363.50, riding the same broad bid with Broadcom up 4% YTD through Monday’s close.

Two Catalysts, Two Different Kinds of Signal

The AMD move follows a Raymond James upgrade from Outperform to Strong Buy, with the firm raising its price target to $641 from $565. Raymond James cited an attractive valuation and a long-term server CPU opportunity tied to AI, projecting the AI server CPU market to grow at a 44% five-year compound annual growth rate and to reach roughly $201 billion in revenue by 2030, driven by continued data center investment, greater use of CPUs to coordinate AI accelerators, and the emergence of agentic computing workloads (we reverse-engineered what the biggest chip winners looked like early in a free playbook here). AMD’s 52-week range of $149.22 to $584.73 means the new target sits above the top of that range.

Intel is moving on a congressional filing showing that Paul Pelosi, spouse of Nancy Pelosi, purchased 10,000 Intel shares valued between $500,001 and $1 million on July 24, along with 50 call contracts at a $50 strike expiring June 17, 2027, reported at $250,001 to $500,000. The transactions carry a spouse-owned (SP) designation and were disclosed in a House filing dated August 21, so the filing itself is what’s new. The underlying buying happened weeks earlier and is not a same-day trade.

Turnaround Names Keep Lapping the AI Incumbents

The split visible in the price action today has been running all year. AMD at 113% and Intel at 136% YTD have far outrun NVIDIA at 12% and Broadcom at 4%, meaning the two names the market treated as turnaround stories have outpaced the two already considered AI winners. Whether that gap continues is a separate question, but the direction of travel this year is unambiguous.

The two catalysts driving today’s identical 3% moves also differ in kind. An analyst upgrade is a forward-looking opinion with a published number attached. A disclosure is a backward-looking record of a trade already executed, and it tells a reader nothing about AI server demand, foundry progress, or margins. Both moved a stock 3% this morning, yet only one carries information about the underlying business.

What to Watch Into NVIDIA’s Print

NVIDIA will report fiscal Q2 2027 results after the close on August 26, and semiconductor sentiment ahead of that report is part of why the group is broadly higher. Polymarket assigns a 0.958 probability to NVIDIA beating its quarterly earnings estimate, but a beat versus a miss is a binary event that can reprice every name in this article within minutes of the release. Investors can watch for whether SOXX holds its lead over QQQ into the close, and how analyst commentary flows through the session.

The setup carries concentrated event risk. The Raymond James target sits above AMD’s 52-week high, so the bull case depends on the AI server CPU forecast being right. Intel’s rally rests on a filing describing trades made a month ago, which is thin support for a durable rerating, and NVIDIA’s Q2 FY2027 print is a single scheduled event capable of moving all four names.

Given that concentration of event risk, investors should keep their position sizes modest across AMD, Intel, NVIDIA, and Broadcom into tomorrow’s release. A moderate stake preserves optionality if the report reprices the group higher, and it limits damage if the reaction runs the other way. Sizing is the variable to control here.
