Eli Lilly Rises 4% While Foundayo Nears European Approval; Amgen and Novo Nordisk Edge Higher
A European regulatory committee just handed Eli Lilly a potential edge over Novo Nordisk in the obesity pill race, and one key detail about how patients take the drug could tip the competitive balance.
A European regulatory endorsement for an oral obesity pill is lifting Eli Lilly (NYSE:LLY | LLY Price Prediction) stock ahead of the rest of the drug group. Eli Lilly stock is up 4% to $1,295.58 in afternoon trading, with the gain building on a recommendation that brings Foundayo closer to European patients. Foundayo now stands one regulatory step from final approval in the European Union, where a rival oral obesity pill already holds authorization.
Checking in on the peers, Amgen (NASDAQ:AMGN) stock is up 2% to $433.71, a solid gain that still trails Eli Lilly stock by a wide margin. Novo Nordisk (NYSE:NVO) stock is up 2% to $39.17, landing in line with Amgen stock and well behind Eli Lilly stock. Amgen and Novo Nordisk shares are moving in step, leaving Eli Lilly stock as the clear outlier on the upside.
Drug and biotechnology stocks are rising broadly alongside Eli Lilly shares, with the iShares Biotechnology ETF (NASDAQ:IBB) up 2% to $209.12. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) is up 0.3% to $768.56, a much quieter move that makes today’s healthcare-sector strength stand out against the broader market.
European Endorsement Brings Foundayo Within Reach of Approval
On October 16, the European Medicines Agency’s human medicines committee recommended approval of Foundayo, Eli Lilly’s oral obesity pill, for weight management and for diabetes treatment. That recommendation puts Foundayo on course to become the second oral drug of its class in the European Union. European Commission decisions generally come within a few weeks of such recommendations, giving Lilly a short track to a final ruling.
Novo Nordisk reached European patients first with its Wegovy pill, which is approved there for weight management only, while the committee’s recommendation covers both weight management and diabetes for Foundayo, giving Eli Lilly a wider proposed label in the same oral category. Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk lead the obesity and diabetes drug market, which makes that scale significant.
Dosing Flexibility Sets Foundayo Apart
Convenience is central to Eli Lilly’s pitch against Novo Nordisk. Foundayo can be taken at any time of day, with or without food or water, while Novo Nordisk’s oral pills must be taken on an empty stomach. That flexibility gives Lilly a simple, clear selling point with physicians and patients weighing the two pills.
Eli Lilly shares are outpacing Amgen stock, Novo Nordisk stock and the iShares Biotechnology ETF, which marks part of the gain as specific to Lilly, while a broader lift for drug and biotechnology stocks accounts for the rest, and that lift shows up in every name in the group. Eli Lilly stock leads the biotechnology fund. That lead points to the Foundayo news adding a company-specific layer on top of the sector bid.
Foundayo’s European Decision Comes Next
Next up for Eli Lilly is whether the European Commission approves Foundayo on its usual timeline. Until that ruling arrives, Foundayo’s European status rests on a committee recommendation. Novo Nordisk holds the first-mover position in Europe in the meantime, with its Wegovy pill already reaching patients there.
Lilly’s bull case depends on a broader label and simpler dosing, while the bear case is that Novo Nordisk’s head start could prove hard to overcome. Foundayo’s European ruling could show whether that edge holds. It may be better for traders to keep their exposure smaller until the European Commission’s decision on Foundayo settles.
