Best Dividend Stocks for Dependable Passive Income: $100,000 Strategy
Selling shares in a downturn to cover living expenses locks in losses at the worst possible moment, but four dividend stocks spread across $100,000 offer a way to let the portfolio sit untouched while the income does the work.

Once you retire, what matters most is how much cash the portfolio pays out each month, more than its total size. Social Security and a pension often leave a gap. Selling shares during a downturn to cover that gap locks in losses at the worst time. A portfolio built around distributions lets the shares stay put while the income covers the bills.
High-yield dividend stocks are one of the most direct ways to build that paycheck. Splitting $100,000 equally among four dividend stocks, $25,000 in each, would generate more than $7,500 a year in passive income at current forward payouts. Three of the four are Gladstone vehicles that pay monthly, which aligns well with monthly household bills. The fourth is a payroll company that supports the group with a quarterly dividend that keeps rising. A $25,000 stake in each of these four high-yield stocks would generate the following annual income.
Paychex
- Forward Yield: 4.08%
- Shares for $25,000: 214.3
- Annual Passive Income: ~$1,020
Paychex (NASDAQ:PAYX | PAYX Price Prediction) sells payroll, HR, retirement, insurance, and PEO services to small and mid-sized businesses. It has expanded upmarket through the Paycor acquisition and added its WISE AI engine to the platform. As an operating company, it returns capital through an earnings-funded policy. The quarterly dividend rose from $0.98 in 2024 to $1.08 in 2025 and $1.19 in 2026.
For an operating company, the safety test is earnings coverage. Adjusted diluted EPS for fiscal Q1 2027 came in at $1.34, above the $1.19 quarterly dividend. Revenue rose 5.9% to $1.63 billion, and management repeated guidance for 7% to 9% adjusted EPS growth in fiscal 2027. One soft spot: operating cash flow fell 42.44% year over year in the quarter. Paychex returned $2.2 billion to shareholders in fiscal 2026, including 5.6 million shares repurchased for $611.0 million.
Gladstone Investment
- Forward Distribution Rate: 6.54%
- Shares for $25,000: 1,703.0
- Annual Passive Income: ~$1,635
Gladstone Investment (NASDAQ:GAIN) is an externally managed business development company (BDC) that buys lower middle-market companies, matching secured debt with large equity stakes. It held 29 portfolio companies valued at about $1.28 billion as of June 30, 2026. As a BDC, it must pass through substantially all of its taxable income. A 12.9% weighted-average yield on its interest-bearing investments funds the $0.08 monthly payout. Equity exits have also produced additional payouts, such as $0.54 in June 2025. The forward rate above leaves those out.
Adjusted net investment income of $0.26 per share in fiscal Q1 2027 covered $0.24 in quarterly distributions. The credit facility grew to $405 million, with its maturity extended to June 2031. The company also expects a significant capital gain from its pending exit from SFEG Holdings. On the risk side, net asset value (NAV) slipped 3.2% sequentially to $16.24, and the Home Concepts restructuring produced a $9.0 million realized loss.
Gladstone Capital
- Forward Distribution Rate: 9.81%
- Shares for $25,000: 1,363.1
- Annual Passive Income: ~$2,454
Gladstone Capital (NASDAQ:GLAD) lends to lower middle-market companies, primarily through secured first-lien loans, and makes some equity co-investments. Its portfolio was worth about $953.3 million at fair value on June 30, 2026, earning an 11.8% weighted-average yield. The ultra-high yield comes from pass-through tax treatment combined with floating-rate loans priced at wide spreads.
Fiscal Q3 2026 net investment income of $0.49 per share covered three monthly $0.15 distributions, or $0.45 for the quarter. A $60 million 7% note issue due December 2029 raised bank line availability above $170 million. A separate $0.18 payment in September 2026 is not part of the regular rate used here. Risks include five non-earning investments totaling $26.7 million, or 3.1% of debt investments at fair value, and yields that could shrink as SOFR falls.
Gladstone Commercial
- Forward Distribution Rate: 9.91%
- Shares for $25,000: 2,064.4
- Annual Passive Income: ~$2,477
Gladstone Commercial (NASDAQ:GOOD) is an externally managed net-lease real estate investment trust (REIT). It owns 151 properties covering about 17.7 million square feet, with a growing share of industrial assets. It sells non-core buildings and puts the proceeds into industrial sites, including a 153,890 sq ft property bought for $22.8 million at a 6.76% cap rate. REITs must pay out at least 90% of their taxable income, and long contractual leases keep the cash flow predictable.
Core funds from operations (FFO) of $0.38 per diluted share in fiscal Q2 2026 covered the $0.30 quarterly distribution. A one-time lease termination fee on a sold property boosted that figure, so it exaggerates the normal buffer. The portfolio was 98.7% leased with 100% cash rent collection. The monthly payout was cut from $0.1254 in 2022 to $0.10 starting in 2023 and has stayed there since. Higher refinancing costs are the main risk.
How the $100,000 Portfolio Adds Up
| Name | Rate Annual | Annual Dividend Income |
|---|---|---|
| Paychex | 4.08% | $1,020 |

| Gladstone Capital | 9.81% | $2,454 |
| Gladstone Commercial | 9.91% | $2,477 |
| Total | 7.59% | $7,586 |
These four positions together generate $7,586 in annual passive income on a $100,000 investment, a combined yield of 7.59%. Paychex contributes $1,020, Gladstone Investment adds $1,635, Gladstone Capital adds $2,454, and Gladstone Commercial brings in $2,477.
Monthly payers make compounding faster. Each reinvested distribution buys more shares, and those shares start earning the following month. Over time, that cycle can grow the income stream without adding new capital. (We rounded up seven of our favorite monthly payers in a free report if you want more names on that schedule.)
