Rivian Climbs 4% as UBS Upgrade Bets on R2 Ramp; Lucid and Tesla Edge Higher

A UBS upgrade is sending Rivian shares sharply higher, but the bull case rests almost entirely on one unproven model hitting a margin milestone that could make or break the company's path to profitability.

The 'RIVIAN' brand name is visible in gold letters on the side, and the unique dark and silver wheels have prominent yellow brake calipers. Other vehicles and orange traffic barrels are visible in the background, suggesting a dynamic road environment.

A fresh analyst upgrade is lifting Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ:RIVN | RIVN Price Prediction). The stock is posting a second straight gain as Wall Street warms up to the electric vehicle (EV) maker’s lower-priced R2 SUV. Rivian stock is at $12.59 in morning trading, up 4%. Even after back-to-back advances, Rivian stock remains down 36% year to date (YTD).

For Rivian, the upgrade comes days after a strong quarterly report. The company disclosed on October 29 that its Q3 2026 revenue rose 38.3% year over year (YoY) to $2.155 billion, while its adjusted loss of $0.48 per share was narrower than analysts expected.

Rivian also raised its full-year 2026 guidance and tightened its delivery outlook to 67,000 to 70,000 vehicles. The quarter’s lift reflected a tariff refund receivable and $81 million in regulatory credits, and Rivian’s automotive business still posted a gross loss of $80 million.

UBS Upgrade Puts Rivian’s R2 Ramp Front and Center

UBS analyst Joseph Spak upgraded Rivian to Buy from Neutral on November 2 and kept his $17 price target. Spak called the recent selloff a buying opportunity ahead of an inflection in both the R2 ramp and Rivian’s automotive gross margins.

The firm also sees solid early demand for the R2 and expects Rivian’s software and services business to help fund growth. In UBS’s view, Rivian’s Autonomy+ driver-assistance subscription could become a U.S. rival to Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) and its Full Self-Driving. The company shouldn’t need new capital before 2029.

Rivian management’s comments on the earnings call line up with that thesis. Derek Mulvey, who was set to become interim CFO on October 30, said on the call, “We expect that R2 will help us achieve a positive automotive gross margin exit rate for the year.”

Lucid and Tesla Trail Rivian’s Rally

Smaller gains are showing up at Lucid Group (NASDAQ:LCID). Lucid stock is at $3.06, up 1%. That bounce leaves Lucid down 71% YTD, a far steeper slide than Rivian’s. Under Silvio Napoli, who led the company’s August 4 earnings call as chief executive, Lucid is still working through a turnaround built on a $1.4 billion cash flow improvement plan for 2026.

Momentum is more muted at Tesla. Tesla stock is at $402.50, up 0.67%. With quarterly revenue of $28.05 billion in its Q3 report on October 21, Tesla operates at a scale where an upgrade for a much smaller rival carries little weight.

Ford Motor (NYSE:F) is holding steady. A mix of gas-powered, hybrid and commercial vehicles leaves Ford less exposed to swings in EV sentiment.

Why Rivian’s Business Model Stands Apart From Lucid and Tesla

Rivian sits between its two peers on price and scale. The company’s lineup now spans the R1 SUV and pickup, commercial delivery vans and the lower-priced R2, which became Rivian’s best-selling vehicle in Q3. Software and services, including development work for Rivian’s Volkswagen joint venture and Autonomy+ subscriptions, give the company a second revenue stream.

Lucid, by contrast, targets the luxury end of the market with its Air sedan and Gravity SUV and relies heavily on financing tied to Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. Tesla pairs a far larger vehicle business with energy storage, Full Self-Driving subscriptions, a robotaxi fleet and Optimus humanoid robots, leaving Rivian’s near-term story depending more heavily than either peer’s on scaling a single mass-market model.

What Could Decide Rivian’s R2 Margin Inflection

Rivian now faces the question of whether the R2 ramp delivers the positive automotive gross margin exit rate management expects for 2026. Broader conditions are offering some support, with falling Treasury yields easing pressure on cash-burning EV makers like Rivian and Lucid. After peaking at 5.31% on October 5, the 10-year Treasury yield fell to 4.98% by October 29.

Optimists can point to Rivian’s raised guidance, a second R2 production shift in Normal, Illinois, and UBS’s upbeat read on the company’s funding runway. Against that, the bears note Rivian’s Q3 net loss of $913 million, negative free cash flow of $1.124 billion and the memory and supplier costs management flagged on its call. Rivian’s funding plan also depends on milestones tied to its Volkswagen, ride-hailing and Department of Energy partners. It may make sense to stay cautious until Rivian’s R2 margin question resolves.
