Sui Unlocks 13 Million Tokens on October 1 After a 60% Surge: Which Coin Will Perform Better in October – XRP or Sui?
Sui just posted a 62% monthly surge while XRP barely budged, yet one of them looks far more vulnerable heading into October, and the reason comes down to forces most traders are overlooking.

Sui (CRYPTO:SUI) is set to release 13.26 million tokens on October 1, 2026, valued at around $15.5 million, following a remarkable 62% increase over the past month. With Sui trading at $1.17 and XRP (CRYPTO:XRP) at $1.49, both cryptocurrencies are down about 17% to 19% this year, making the comparison between XRP and Sui particularly intriguing for October.
Despite trading at similar prices, the two coins have experienced very different market trajectories. Sui is currently 78.1% below its all-time high of $5.35 from January 2025 and has lost 64.4% over the past year. In contrast, XRP sits 59.2% below its peak of $3.65 and is down 47.7%. So, which coin is better positioned for October?
Sui’s October 1 Unlock Adds Only 0.32% to Its Supply

An unlock event releases tokens held under specific vesting agreements, preventing early investors, team members, and foundations from selling their coins immediately. Once the lock expires, these coins become tradable.
In Sui’s case, the upcoming release will add only 0.32% to its total supply. Since this date was publicly announced, traders had time to prepare for the event. However, early recipients might take profits after such a significant monthly gain, leading on-chain trackers to monitor if the unlocked coins are moved to exchange deposits, which could indicate selling pressure.
XRP, on the other hand, has a more substantial supply overhang. Around 63.1 billion XRP are currently circulating out of a fixed total of 100 billion. Ripple holds most of the remaining 36.9 billion tokens in escrow and releases them on a predetermined schedule. Traders have factored in these releases for years, and the ongoing influx of XRP ETFs has also locked up around 900 million tokens on the opposite side of the equation.
Sui Flashed a Golden Cross, Then Leveraged Traders Pulled It Back

Sui’s chart recently formed a “golden cross,” a bullish signal that occurs when the 50-day moving average crosses above the 200-day moving average. This pattern suggests the recent price rally is supported by strong momentum. Sui’s price jumped from $0.72 on September 1 to $1.04 by September 21, with the moving averages catching up afterward.
Noteworthy macro investor Raoul Pal has said the market may be undervaluing Sui’s future potential, though he did not provide specific figures to support the claim. However, these optimistic views came after Sui’s price gains, suggesting that such coverage may be reactive rather than predictive.
Despite the positive signals, Sui showed signs of weakness the same week. The token reached a high of $1.29 on September 27 but closed at $1.15 on September 29, and then dropped nearly 4% in just one hour on September 30 due to forced liquidations from leveraged positions. Sui is currently trading about 9% below that September high.
XRP’s 8% Month Leaves Less Gain to Give Back

While Sui surged 62% over the past month, XRP only gained about 8%, meaning its holders have less profit to lose if the market moves against them. In addition, Sui’s gains have come with greater volatility, as seen in its price swings over the last year, during which it has lost 64.4%.
XRP benefits from having a substantial market cap of $94.2 billion, roughly 20 times larger than Sui’s $4.8 billion. This larger market cap generally means it takes more selling pressure to drive the price down. Moreover, XRP ETFs saw an influx of $38 million in just two days at the end of September, providing additional buying support.
Will XRP Hold Up Better Than Sui in October?
Looking ahead to October, XRP seems more likely to hold its ground compared to Sui. The rapid exit of leveraged traders in Sui indicates potential instability, while XRP’s modest 8% increase leaves less room for a pullback. For investors in Sui, the 13.26 million-token unlock may be a minor concern compared with the broader risks of a volatile post-surge trading environment.
While this analysis leans toward XRP, it does not rule out Sui’s upside if the rally continues. If a significant amount of unlocked SUI tokens heads to exchanges in the first week of October, selling pressure could increase.
Meanwhile, XRP is at a critical price point of $1.49, the lower end of its September 30 trading range. If XRP falls below this level, will the XRP-vs-SUI comparison still favor XRP in October?
