Zcash Is Up 394% in a Year and Still 59% Below a High It Set in 2016. Is That High Closer Than Bitcoin’s?

Zcash has surged nearly 400% in a year while Bitcoin sits far closer to its own record, but a quirk of crypto history scrambles the obvious conclusion about which coin has the shorter road back to glory.

Zcash (CRYPTO:ZEC) has seen impressive growth over the past year, gaining 394%. However, it still trades about 59% below its all-time high of $3,192, set in late October 2016. Zcash is known for its privacy features, which let users send payments discreetly. Notably, it has surged 152% in 2026 alone.

As of October 12, 2026, Zcash is valued at about $1,304. By comparison, Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) trades at about $83,400, about 34% below its record high of $126,080, set on October 6, 2025.

So, which cryptocurrency has the shorter road back to its peak?

Zcash Needs 2.4 Times Its Current Price to Reach Its 2016 High

At first glance, Bitcoin might seem to have a shorter climb ahead. Zcash would need to rise about 2.4 times to reach $3,192, while Bitcoin needs to rise about 1.5 times to hit its peak of $126,080. Based solely on these multiples, Bitcoin appears to have the advantage.

However, Zcash’s record needs context. It hit $3,192 shortly after its launch, but within days, the price fell to around $572. Such a rapid drop often suggests there wasn’t solid buying support behind the initial peak, making it a less reliable target.

Zcash’s $3,192 Record Came From a Thin Launch Market

Launch prices typically behave erratically. Zcash gradually releases new coins, so supply is limited at the start. This scarcity meant that a small amount of investment pushed the price up quickly, without broad market validation.

In contrast, Bitcoin’s record high of $126,080 was set in a much deeper, heavily traded market. Consequently, the 34% drop from this peak reflects the genuine demand needed to bring Bitcoin back up.

Zcash’s Privacy Rally Is Still Running

Nonetheless, Zcash’s recent performance is noteworthy. The 394% increase over the past year and a 152% gain in 2026 highlight its strength. The upward trend continues, with Zcash rising 13.4% in the last 30 days and 5.5% in the last 24 hours. This rally makes Zcash one of the standout investments of 2026 so far.

However, it’s uncertain whether the momentum for privacy-focused coins like Zcash can sustain its pace. A surge of this magnitude often prompts traders to move in and out of positions. So, the future remains unclear for those holding Zcash after such a strong run.

Is the Zcash All-Time High Closer Than Bitcoin’s?

No, Bitcoin’s all-time high is closer, needing only 1.5 times its current value compared to Zcash’s 2.4 times. Moreover, Bitcoin’s record matters more because it was set in a well-established market. In this comparison, Zcash’s 2016 high largely stemmed from a thin launch spike, which reduces its significance. For Zcash holders, the recent surge in 2026 is a more accurate measure than the 2016 record.

The rest of 2026 will test Zcash. If it stays above $1,304 through the end of December, it could signal a continued upward trend. However, if its 30-day gain turns negative while Bitcoin holds steady above $83,400, it may indicate that investors are shifting their attention back to Bitcoin, leaving the privacy trade behind.
